When undertaking home renovation or clearance projects, selecting the appropriate skip size is crucial for efficient waste management. The 4 yard, 5 yard, and 6 yard skips are popular choices, each catering to different project scales and types of waste.
4 Yard Skips
Often referred to as “midi skips,” 4 yard skips are ideal for small domestic tasks such as garden clean-ups, minor kitchen or bathroom refurbishments, and garage decluttering. They typically hold approximately 30 – 40 bin bags of waste, with dimensions around 1.83m in length, 1.29m in width, and 0.97m in height. Due to their compact size, they fit comfortably on most driveways, often eliminating the need for a skip permit.
5 Yard Skips
Positioned between the 4 yard and 6 yard options, 5 yard skips offer a versatile solution for medium-sized projects. They can accommodate approximately 50 – 60 bin bags of waste. This size is suitable for tasks like larger room renovations or extensive garden landscaping. While not as commonly available as other sizes, 5-yard skips provide a balance between capacity and footprint, making them a practical choice for projects requiring moderate waste disposal.
6 Yard Skips
Known as “small builders’ skips,” 6 yard skips are frequently used for construction and substantial domestic projects, including full kitchen or bathroom renovations and significant garden overhauls. They typically hold about 40 – 55 bin bags of waste, with dimensions approximately 2.6m in length, 1.5m in width, and 1.2m in height. Their larger capacity makes them suitable for bulkier waste materials, such as rubble and soil. However, due to their size, placement considerations are essential, and a permit may be required if positioned on public property.
When choosing between these skip sizes, assess the scope of your project and the volume of waste anticipated. Opting for a slightly larger skip than initially estimated can prevent the inconvenience and potential additional costs of needing a second skip. |
